Thank you for this history. Is it reasonable to spend a few hours there in late July? We will be staying nearby for one night before our tour to Tuscany but I am concerned about the heat and the jet lag.

It depends a great deal on the time of day, certainly not ideal in the middle of the day in the hottest weeks of the year (jet lag or not)!

One of my favourite places. I always advise people new to Rome to go to Ostia Antica. I can’t understand why there are always so few people there but I don’t mind, all the better to let one imagine how it was 2000 years ago.

It is wonderful. Unfortunately most of the mosaics are covered in winter for their protection.
