You got such great photos! I was there yesterday afternoon and it was packed! Almost like being on an ATAC bus, practically shoulder to shoulder! Could hardly admire the paintings much less get a good photo. But still, such a treat to have 25 of 50 of his paintings in one place is such a luxury. Just being in the presence of his deep reds and draped fabric that seem real is extraordinary.
I have to agree! We were there yesterday midday and it was a case of ducking and weaving to see the stunning art. Particularly annoying was the guided tour group hogging the gallery space. My husband and I agreed that we prefer slipping into churches and seeing Caravaggio "in the wild"!
So glad I saw it early on with space to wander. Regarding the light - when I walked in, I felt I had to physically readjust my eyes to see in the dimness … which did feel like it grew, especially the dazzling light of John the Baptist leaping off the wall. But there is sheer joy there.
Thanks for that, as always, fascinating. How bad will it get to get tickets -- we arrive right on Easter weekend. Wait till May -- middle of the week? lunch time?
What a great piece, look forward to part 2! Every time we visit Rome (which is not as often as we’d like), my husband and I visit the churches housing Caravaggios and admire them at our leisure.
It seems like an exhibition such as this one should last longer, but perhaps those who have loaned pieces do not want to part with them for too long. Although I can’t be there this time, seeing it through your eyes and with such lovely descriptions and context is truly the next best thing, thank you!!
Thanks so much for this, I look forward to the second instalment. So many paintings I had never seen, a far more extensive show than the one years ago at the Scuderie.
Yes it was 2010, 400 years after his death. I have the catalogue which was really well done. Recently I visited the Doria Pamphili, imagine a private collection having three of his paintings.
What a great post! I can't wait to go see the exhibition. I'll bring a copy of your post with me as it will certainly bring all of these paintings to life through your amazing descriptions. Thank you!

Thanks Michelle, I took these not long after it opened and midweek. I wonder if they’ve increased ticket numbers?

I’d look on the website, link in first line, right away and see what you can find! And I look forward to seeing you in May!
Thak you. I'm pretty excited too!

What engaging writing. I look forward to the next piece and to seeing the exhibition in a few weeks.
thank you!

Thanks Carol, my memory of the Scuderie show is I’m afraid rather hazy. It was 2010 I think?

Yes, there were lots of anniversary events! And the D-P is a fabulous museum, and all their Caravaggios are in situ at the moment!

Love your photos, they add so much to your narrative.
