The Palatine Hill, part of the splendid Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, is the ultimate example of rus in urbe. It is a magical, bucolic, dramatic, and glorious place, infused at every turn with Imperial endeavour and the history and legend upon which that endeavour was founded. It is quite possibly my favourite place in the world; I love it more than I can say. A stone’s throw from the hubbub of the Colosseum, it also provides (probably) the best view anywhere.
