Luciano Ligabue is a sort of Northern Italian Bruce Springsteen. He comes from Correggio in Emilia-Romagna, which was given its city status by Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and was among the cities awarded the Cross of Military Valour for the actions of its partisan citizens, including Ligabue’s grandfather, during the Second World War. The town’s other most celebrated son is Antonio Allegri. Known simply as Il Correggio, he was a sixteenth century painter of great success in Northern Italy whose work includes, amongst much else, the dizzying interior of the dome of Parma Cathedral.

The dome of Parma Cathedral emerging from the shadows, Antonio Allegri da Correggio. Photo taken on my visit in 2014, excuse the quality. A better version (not mine) can be found here.
