I realised this morning that today is a big anniversary for me, so please excuse the self-indulgent nature of this post. I arrived in Rome on the evening of the last Saturday in January of the year two thousand, which was twenty-three years ago today and I didn’t know a single person in the city. So that’s officially just over half of my life living in Rome which feels like a milestone. Gosh. I had thought I might stay for six months.
And any of us who have had you as a tour guide are grateful that you persisted, and also, would never have guessed you were ever shy. Sweet photo of the both of you, x
I really enjoyed reading this Agnes. Your description of arriving in Rome reminded me of my travelling adventures in my 20’s pre-cellphone. I hope I can join you on a tour in Rome one day soon.
I love re reading this post . I LOVE the fact that you were able to travel to Rome on a whim and stay there . Sad that is now denied to others. especially our young people
Very sad. There was a window of 24 years between Maastricht and Brexit. It never occurred to me I was doing anything unusual, I just assumed that was how things had always been.
The tour yesterday was the greatest pleasure from the first to the last moment -- I learned soooo much, you filled in so many blanks, connected so many threads, I am in awe of what you know and how you use it. And there was that delightful moment when I noticed that on the Sistine Chapel's roof, there is God's naked butt. No buts about it, that's what it is. I've been chuckling ever since.
Absolutely lovely post Agnes & inspiring too. Also that selfie is adorable !
thanks Anne!
Young yes, but you had nerve.
Great Post.
Congratulations.
thanks Wim!

Love it!! I accidentally immigrated to Australia at the same time! Hahaha
Thanks, and it appears accidental emigration is easily done!
Loved reading this! One day I'd love to tour Rome with you and see it through your eyes.
thanks a lot! I hope to see you in Rome before too long!
A great piece of memoir!
thanks Kyle
Auguri. A lovely post. I'm looking forward to the next 20 years

Yours, also accidentally emigrated, Ulrike
thank you Ulrike, it was super meeting you all! Massimo was very pleased to know his carbonara is such a success!
Making me wish I had an extra lifetime to echo your steps! Thanks Agnes.
thanks Cathy!
What a privilege it was also to be twenty and in Florence all those years ago… thank you for this wonderful post!
