One of my favourite things in St Peter’s Basilica is the funerary monument to the last of the Stuarts, not least because a piece of bonny Scotland in bella Roma has a wonderfully improbable air.
I wonder how many monuments to women there are at the Vatican? I've only been there three times, but the only other one I can think of is Queen Christina of Sweden.
You're right there aren't many! There's also a monument to Matilda of Canossa (though erected five centuries after her death) and the tomb of Charlotte, Queen of Cyprus in the grottoes and off the top of my head they're all I can think of.
Just fascinating to read this I live part time in Rome and Santi Apostoli is my parish Church where there is a monument to Maria Clementina .The very popular ‘Abruzzi ‘restaurant in that piazza is also part of Palazzo Muti now and there is an engraving of Bonnie Prince Charlie near the entrance
This is fabulous, as always!
