I had this marvelous fellow all to myself for about 15 minutes last year. I finally realized that I couldn't look at him without my eyes becoming watery. If that doesn't tell of the power of art, I don't what does. This post brought me right back there again. There's power in that too, Agnes. Thank you as always.
Very interesting to read about this incredible statue as I used to live on Via IV Novembre by the Quirinale where it was discovered during an excavation
What excellent photographs of this piece, how sad the man is. Has the statue been restored recently? I don't remember such a dappled look. I agree Palazzo Massimo is a wonderful museum and not well known. Thank you so much for this newsletter.

Thank you Cathy, I quite agree it’s very moving
I looked at him and wept.
Thank you Agnes. Next time in Rome I'll need to go and have a much closer look at him In the past I have focused more on his mesmerising face.
BTW my friends Sue and Damien loved their morning with you.
thanks so much for the recommendation!
Beautiful Agnes. Thank you once again for a treasure in my Inbox.

Thanks Aline!
I’ve been to the Palazzo Massimo, but can’t believe I missed this wonderful sculpture. Next time…
It was under restoration recently so it was quite possibly not visible, but well worth a return visit!

Thank you Carol, and yes there a recent restoration which has made copper detailing more visible.
I've always loved this piece-- fascinating to hear the story behind it and your insights into the details of it. Tremendous post.
Thank you!
I find the stories of the rediscovery of ancient works fascinating. Thanks for sharing such a detailed look at this beautiful piece.
Thanks Susan!
That someone cherished him enough to save him pleases me immensely. We're all him in the end.
